What It's All About...

Let's go back in time to April, 2006, just over 5 years ago. I received a phone call from a lady, (for now we'll refer to her as Ell). Ell lived in a heavily congested part of a nearby major city. After living there for over 30 years, and now retired, she's decided to pack up and move to a more relaxing place.

She looked to the East and saw beautiful Delmarva. Over the years, Ell made many visits to the beaches and she even has a few friends scattered over the Eastern Shore. So, she had been somewhat familiar with the area. Now was the time.

Talking from one person to an0ther, she came up with my name and phone number. Ell was quite descriptive as to what type of home she wanted. Immediately, a search was underway.

After several weeks of sending Ell updated information, she did finally find a home she really liked. But, this particular home was way above her price range. In the frustration, Ell decided that perhaps it wasn't the right time. She put her search on hold.

After about 6 months, my phone rang and it was Ell. Her home situation had changed slightly and was ready to kick it up again. So, I re-executed the search, with a few minor changes. Ell realized she would not be able to make a new purchace until she sold her current home. During the time of this search, I had referred Ell to an excellent REALTOR in her urban area to assist her with selling her home. By this time the real estate market was beginning to crumble. The possibility of Ell selling her home at a reasonable price was gone.

After that, I tried to keep Ell's dream alive. If I saw anything close to possible for her, I'd send it her way. Ell never gave up on her dream.

Just before the holidays, 2010, Ell contacted me again with great news. Her financial standing had changed and she was fortunate enough to now be able to purchase a home without having to sell her current house.

Again, the search was on. Back in April, Ell let me know there was a home in her search that looked like a really good possibility. We looked it over, then flipped around some numbers to see if it would work.

Today, Ell put in a contract on the home and all is looking great so far. Ell still has to go through the typical home inspections, etc. But, settlement is aiming for mid to end of July. So, everyone's fingers are crossed. After, over 5 years of dreaming and searching Ell may have her Eastern Shore home. I'll keep you updated as we get closer to settlement.

It took 5 years of frustrations, sweating, and many phone calls, but I now have a new friend. My new friend may have a new home. Business is about building relationships. This one will be one of my most memorable. This is what it's all about!

Are you just too busy this week?

Since last weekend, there's a sense in the air that every thing's going crazy. It's as if there's too much going on. That brings up the question "can we handle it?" Let's review: Last weekend we had to set the clocks forward for Daylight Saving Time. This reminds me, we still have two clocks that have yet to be adjusted.

I've always considered it may take us humans a week to recover from the lost sleep. Day by day, as your brain slowly recovers, it gets better. Sunday and Monday (after adjusting the clocks), are for many people, dreadful. I know for me, waking up is a little tougher. Monday, I was very clumsy. I stumbled through the kitchen and twisted my foot.

The rest of the week was quite a challenge. On Thursday, I had to drive from the Salisbury area over to the Long Neck area in Delaware to assist a home seller. When I got there, my car's "Low Fuel" light and chime clicked on. So while I headed to my next destination, I pulled into a local convenience store to gas up the car. While getting out of the car, I realized I had left my wallet at home that morning. My life is in my wallet. Life as in "plastic".

Panic was setting in. I searched my pockets and then all through the car for some cash. I did find 3 one dollar bills. I then thought, I can't go into a store with just $3, since gas is now over $3.50 just about everywhere. That wouldn't buy a complete gallon. How embarrassing? Credit and debit cards are usually, very convenient. This was the exception!

I drove back out on the road heading homeward. Then, I got a brainstorm... I'll take my chances of running out of gas. I have membership in an auto club. I'll just call them on my cell phone, they'll show up with gas. Oops.. one problem.. the auto club card with their phone number and my secret membership ID number, is resting comfortably IN MY WALLET!

I kept my fingers crossed and kept driving. Fortunately, the gas stretched like elastic and I made it home. I ran in the house, found my wallet, rolled the dice, and headed to the nearest gas station. As I rolled up to the pump, the engine began to cough. I had just made it. Even though, I had wasted nearly two hours of my life because I couldn't remember my wallet.

Now, here we are at the end of this crazy week, including St. Patrick's day. I can say, I've been to some fairly wild St. Patrick's celebrations, but this year was rather tame. But now we've learned that tonight we're under the mysterious light of the Super Moon. The moon is closer to the Earth than usual. Some believe we'll experience all kinds of creepy stuff; high tides, weird weather, flying monkeys, free cheeseburgers, etc. (OK, I made up the last two).

All this stuff in one week? Amazing, but there's still one more. The first day of Spring is upon us. Of course beware, as every year we haven't seen the end of cold weather.

Is that everything? I hope so. Like I said, there's just too much to keep track of this past week. If I missed anything, please let me know.

The year is ticking by sooo fast. We're already coming up to Fat Tuesday. The final day to over indulge, before Lent. Numerous churches and civic groups will of course have their traditional Pancake Suppers.

Could that be Spring?

This time of year, we look around for any early sign of Spring. Maybe one or two freak flowers will somehow, start sprouting. This weekend, the temps are supposed to dip into the teens. After all it's still January.

One sign of Spring getting close on the Eastern Shore is that we're just a few weeks away from the Ocean City annual Custom Car Show. This event brings in folks from all over.

If that turns out to be a nice weather weekend, come join us. I know I'll be heading to the beach for that one. See Ya' there!

That Time Of Year

The Eastern Shore is getting all decked out with Christmas and Holiday decorations. Last year we fought off a big bad blizzard. I'm not talking about a quick trip to Dairy Queen.

This year (so far), seems a little more tame. It does get cold at night of course. At this time of year people are talking about sharing and so on..

I recently found this picture being circulated around the internet. Everyone should get a chance to see it. I refer to it as "The Friendly Beast".. Can this fellow find a warmer place to lay?

More Turkey?

Well now, we've survived Thanksgiving, Black Friday, and Super Savings Saturday. Don't you feel like you've accomplished something? Not really. The only thing I've learned is that I'm quite clever. I've been able to re-arrange the refrigerator twice in three days. This was required, due to the over dose of leftovers.

Lots of folks like to come to the Eastern Shore during Thanksgiving weekend, and we enjoy seeing everyone. One of the big highlights is shopping at the outlet malls in Rehoboth Beach.

Whatever you did this weekend or whatever you still intend on doing turns out to be a fun time for everyone involved. It's official, the holidays are here.

I'm guessing that between now and Christmas, opening and closing that refrigerator door, will burn out at least one refrigerator light bulb.

Sad but true..

It's sad that to so many, this is just a day off of work or school. There are some big department store Sales. And... every car dealer has turned today into an event. I don't believe this was the intention when those in power arrived at "the 11th hour, on the 11th day.... etc."

Today is Veteran's Day. A day specifically defined as the day to salute those serving and to those who have served in our brave military around the world. I am however impressed that several restaurant chains have advertised that vets can eat at their establishments for FREE today. That's at least something.

If you attend a special service today, like the one held here on the Shore at Ocean Pines, feel proud to have associated with some of the greatest people on Earth. If you see someone wearing a VFW or American Legion cap, or a cap from a Naval Ship, or a cap from a specific military division, or if you see someone in uniform, be sure to sincerely, offer your thanks. Shake their hand.

Happy Birthday America

Ah yes, all the 4th of July festivities are set for the Eastern Shore and everywhere around this great country. This was and is, one of my favorite holiday celebrations. It makes me feel good see the flags, parades, and patriotic displays. Too many people feel it's somehow un-hip or corny to be patriotic or be proud of our truly American culture.

Right now America is suffering from a lot of negativity. But, we've done that before and I have faith that it will pass. Our American holidays come and go, and each time they give us a refreshing shot in the arm, like a patriot booster shot. It helps remind us and recharges our Red/White & Blue battery.

Where ever you're celebrating the 4th for 2010, remember to fly your flag, take a few moments to pray and think about our troops around the world, who make this celebration possible, and most importantly sing along with God Bless America! (don't worry I'm out of key too)

Wow is the only way to explain the perfect weather for Summer Season 2010 (so far) on the Eastern Shore. Since Memorial Day weekend, I've spent some time at most of our local beaches and hot spots. It's been great. If you're not already here on the Shore, I suggest you make an attempt to head this way to spend some time this Summer. Especially, if the weather so far, is an indicator of what's coming.

And get this... the National Civic League has named their 10 winners of the "2010 All American Citys Awards". One of those, just happens to be our own, "Salisbury, Maryland". Read about it by CLICKING HERE.

Ready For Lift Off

With Memorial Day Weekend just around the corner, it looks as though all this Summer's, Eastern Shore vacation attractions are ready. Over the last few weeks, I've played the role of tourist, and driven through most of the hot spots.

From Lewes to Rehoboth, Dewey to Bethany, down to Fenwick, through Ocean City, and even as far as Assateague, everything is ready to Rock.

So, I'm hoping you're planning to spend some time this Summer on the Eastern Shore. Please drop an email to let me know where you're headed. Remember too, if you're considering making the Eastern Shore your permanent home, please let me know. That way I can assist you in finding the perfect Summer get away. There are also some excellent investment opportunities with resort area properties. That could mean some nice rental income and a place to visit, that you can call your own.

I'll be looking for you this Summer. I'll be the guy getting another refill of caramel popcorn.

What A Year ... So Far

Here on the Eastern Shore, we've survived one of the nastiest Winters in many years. Then we had severely, heavy rains. Some are still sleeping off "Saint Patrick's Day". Some are still trying to figure out how to change their clocks for Daylight Saving Time. Others are still eating the last of their Easter candy. Ever notice how Peeps get really hard and flavorless as they age?

Now, we've made it to Spring, 2010, and some have even lived through the dreaded "TAX DAY" (4/15). Just wait til next year for that one to jolt ya.

In reality, Kelly and I are just sitting back and saying... bring on Ocean City's Spring Fest and come on Summer. We've prematurely planted our flower bed (prematurely in the opinion of some folks). Then two nights ago, we were flinging plastic bags over all the flowers due to a frost advisory. As my memory stirs, it seems we do the plastic bag dance, at least, once every Spring.

We actually broke down a couple of weeks ago, went into our disorganized shed, and pulled out Kelly's bike and the charcoal grill. Yummers McGummers..

Summer isn't just a season, it's a natural, human need! Let's get this party started. (Great idea for a song).

S-A-L-U-T-E... In The Snow

Like much of the Mid-Atlantic, the Eastern Shore has been hit with a tremendous snow storm. We are currently under a blizzard warning. (That used to mean a trip to Dairy Queen).

Thousands of folks come to the Shore every year. Many don't realize there are many wonderful people that live here year round. Many of those operate farms on the Shore. One that deserves a big S-A-L-U-T-E (as they used to say on Hee Haw), is Georgetown resident, Jay Baxter.

During the recent snow storms, Maryland and Delaware were declared to be in State of Emergency. When that happened many National Guard troops and their equipment were dispatched to the area. Even the might of the military didn't know what to expect on the all unique, Eastern Shore.

Here, a National Guard truck slid off the road. Jay Baxter brought in his powerful farm equipment to rescue the military vehicle.

Jay spent the weekend assisting motorists and other National Guard throughout the area. My friend, Vance Phillips provided these pictures and said; "In my opinion, a lot of unsung heroes have emerged from the farm community during this crisis. Many took the initiative to begin plowing roads and driveways in their community as early as Saturday when the storm was at its peak. Many continue to help as we speak."

Vance is right. There are many unsung heros all over the area. My wifed Kelly and I are very fortunate to have neighbors with some heavy duty equipment that they used to assist us in digging out. If not for them, we'd still be shoveling. Not fun!

So, as the snow continues, remember to shovel in intervals of no more than 20 minutes, lift with your knees and most importantly.. wear pants (just kidding). The best part is, Spring and Summer are still on the way!

How Much Snow, Is Too Much?

I think we may find the answer to that question here on the Eastern Shore this weekend. The Media is beginning its barrage of scare tactics regarding the weather. Many weather sources have conflicting forecasts.

Personally I'm a firm believer in Accuweather. They appear to usually be the most accurate.

So, now is when, we the sheep will head to the grocery stores to stock up on milk and personal paper products. I never understood this. I don't know about you, but when it's snowing, I don't believe that I consume more milk than when it's not snowing. Before the panic sets in, let's think this out some.

Whatever the case, if we just get rain and flurries, or if we get 15 feet of the white stuff, we'll just deal with it. Do stay safe and warm. Maybe we'll see you on the other side. Just remember, don't drink more than your share of the milk.

Shore Is Cold Today

Yes, we are going through a cold spell right now on the Eastern Shore. Last night we got down into the 20's. Later this week, it's predicted to go even lower. Not too many years ago, when the Winter weather got severe, most events around here shut down. Now, it's not the case.

Believe it or not, there's a great event coming up in February... Mark your calendars! It's called Rehoboth Beach Main Street. From Friday, February 12 through Fat Tuesday, February 16, participating downtown Rehoboth Beach restaurants will have New Orleans inspired menus, Bourbon Street beverages, incredible Mardi Gras parties, raffle prizes and beads, beads, beads!!! Come downtown to celebrate Mardi Gras --it's a blast! As it gets closer, I'll dig up more information.

One thing that'll help make today warmer is that my wife Kelly and I are celebrating our 17th Wedding Anniversary. (Am I kissing up or what?). Before we go out to dinner tonight, we'll spend a quiet day home by the fire, watching movies. Ain't it Great!

A Slightly White Christmas

Christmas time on the Eastern Shore is pretty much the same as anywhere else. The malls and shopping centers get congested with traffic from Thanksgiving to Christmas Eve. And you top that with the big snowfall from last week and the excitement increases.

The Central part of the Shore received 2-10 inches of white stuff. Same for most of the beach areas. I can't remember the last time we got even close to a White Christmas. So here it is, Christmas day and a lot of the snow has still not melted. As far a white, not quite. For the most part there's mud and slush everywhere. Most cars have that nasty coating, that make them really ugly. Unless we get more snow soon, the local car washes will start heavily, increasing business in the next two weeks.

Every once in a while you'll see a farm field smoothed over with a layer of the cold stuff, and it gives a picturesque view, like you'd see on a calendar. It's a case of; you take what you can get.

Last night (Christmas Eve), my wife Kelly and I, shared and most enjoyable time at church to start out this special annual occasion. I hope you have the opportunity to share this wonderful season as well.

Big or Small Town

Here's a great example of living on the Eastern Shore. We often discuss the beaches, or hunting & fishing, or golf, or retirement areas. Something not often brought up is small town living.

Earlier tonight, the town of Delmar's High School won the state championship. The game was played in Dover, Delaware, about an hour and a half away. The game was originally scheduled for last night, but the weather delayed it until this afternoon.

When the buses got back to town, carrying the winning team, the cheerleaders, the band and color guard, they were met on the highway with a huge parade of team supporters and the local fire department. The lights were flashing, horns were blowing, sirens screaming. It was a great celebration.

The entire parade circled through the whole town and ended at the high school. Also, in honor of the win, school was called off tomorrow.

You can only do these things in small town America, and I love it! True Americana at it's best is being reflected here.

Another thing that personally makes me proud is my wonderful wife Kelly. She works hard at the Delmar High School as a teaching assistant and she is also the Assistant Band Director. She does an outstanding job working with the Color Guard. So, thank you Kelly, Delmar appreciates what you do for them, and so do I.

Turkey Day 2009

The big day is here. Lots of overeating, over cooking, over and under planning. Lots of family and friends arguing if eating turkey makes you sleepy. I'm sure overdosing on all the other carbs may have something to do with that!

Lots of folks head to the Eastern Shore for the long holiday weekend. So far, this week has been a little on the gray side weather wise. Hopefully, that'll change before it's all gone.

When you're reflecting on things to be thankful for, be sure to keep our brave military in mind. They're spending their holiday all around the world protecting us. Without them we wouldn't have these warm holidays to celebrate.

One more thing to be thankful for... The RT 90 bridge, connecting the North End of Ocean City, Maryland reopened yesterday. All the repairs are complete, and weeks ahead of schedule. Good work. (insert applause here).

Not A Good Day To Visit Ocean City

If you're heading to OC today, you must have your head in a box. For one thing, weather wise, there's big storms a brewin'. We're expecting high winds and heavy downpours through tomorrow or even Monday.

On top of that, the RT 90 bridge will be closing at 10 this morning for repairs. It will remain closed, at least through December. So, even if you're not heading to OC today but maybe later on, keep the closed bridge in mind.. This means, to get to Ocean City, you'll either have to take RT 50 all the way in to the Inlet end of OC. You could also come in from the North and Delaware RT 1 through Rehoboth, or on Delaware RT 54, through Selbyville, DE and Fenwick Island. The only other options would be, by boat, or firing up your helicopter, or swimming up on the beach from up or down the coast.

Please don't blame me for the inconvenience. I'm just the messenger. Once the sun breaks through the clouds again next week, head to the Shore. We're still open for business.

I Need To Buy Some Pom Poms

Folks that know me, know that long before I moved to the Eastern Shore, I was a die hard fan of the Baltimore Colts. Memorial Stadium and names like Unitas, Amechie, Barry, Macke, Lipscomb, Donovan, Matte, and many more, were a big part of my daily discussions years ago.

When the Colts left Baltimore for Indianapolis in the early 80's they took a part of many fans hearts, including mine. One thing that stayed behind was an outstanding marching band. Tonight ESPN is featuring a documentary by Barry Levinson (famous for his Baltimore based movies; Hairspray, Diner, Avalon, and others like Rainman). Tonight's film hits the cable @ 8 PM on ESPN.. Here we are just a weekend away from Labor Day and the traditional closing of Summer. Here on the Eastern Shore, we'll be watching Danny. That's the Atlantic storm that may or may not evolve into a full Hurricane.

Current predictions show that Danny will hit around Cape Cod. As it skirts the Maryland and Delaware beaches, it may throw off some rain and heavy rockin', surf.

A Beautiful Weekend

This is a special weekend for my family. My son, his wife and their baby (my grand daughter) is coming to visit from Little Rock, Arkansas. This will be the first time seeing her, since she was born last September. Kelly and I are really looking forward to this week.

Happy Birthday America

Gas prices are lower this year, than last year's $4 per gallon trauma. So, look for everyone to be hitting the road this weekend. The "Fourth of July" doesn't just stand for America's Birthday. It's a good time to reflect on everything American. First and foremost, to give thanks to those who wear the uniforms of our military and to those who gave their all!

Without getting too political, it's an important time to concentrate on the direction of our country. Are we headed down the right road? If you agree or disagree, you have to make your opinion known at the ballot box. That goes for any elections from school boards to all the federal offices. YES, your vote does count, every time.

We live in a blessed country, and we're the caretakers. Let's do our job! God bless the Red, White, & Blue! Please remember to fly your flag!

Ruth Marzano lived in the Salisbury area until a few years ago, when her husband Tom took on a new job in upstate New York. They packed up the youngin's and headed for the tundra. In doing so, they left many friends behind here on the Eastern Shore.

Ruth emailed me this morning, telling about one of her Salisbury friends, Erin Kennedy. Right now, Erin needs a lot of help due to her health condition. Since Erin is a friend of a friend, and that makes her a true friend in need, I decided to help spread the word.

Summer Weekend # 1 On The Shore Was a Hit!

Those gates to Ocean City were wide open this past weekend. Maryland's second largest city (in the Summer), drew the largest crowd since 1993 according to the mayor's office. The Eastern Shore saw major traffic increases everywhere. It's a great place to be! Our friends, Mike, Nicole, and their son Nolan couldn't resist. They came to visit OC from Pennsylvania.

This weekend, that momentum will keep rockin'. Ocean City is having a big "Ravens" parade on the 30th, and you NASCAR Fans will be pumped, as this week's race is on the Miracle Mile in Dover. So, if you're heading to the ocean resorts this weekend, be prepared for some traffic delays in the Dover area.

It looks like Summer '09 is off to a Big Start! If you're not already on the Shore, come on down! We'd love to see you. Open The Gates

Here we go... Memorial Day Weekend officially starts up the Summer Season on the Eastern Shore. Not that there aren't lots of visitors in the Spring and Fall. But, now it appears we'll have visitors in bigger numbers than in several years.

Last year as you remember, gas prices were crawling up to the $4.00 mark and lots of vacationers scratched their plans. They can't put it off any longer. So, we'll batten down the hatches as we get set for another great Eastern Shore Summer.

Rev 'Em Up...

If the weather holds out, this should be an exciting weekend. It's Cruisin' Weekend in Ocean City. This event will host more than 3,000 hot rods, customs, and street machines. There will be more than 20 different car shows along the Boardwalk...and tons of entertainment.

One of the positive side effects of Crusin' Weekend is that all the hot rods have to travel through other areas of the Eastern Shore to get to O.C. So, in a small way, we all benefit from this event. Everywhere you look around the Shore you'll see the wild assortment of vehicles heading in and out of the area!

Business As Usual... Not Quite

It was over 3 weeks ago (tax day April 15th), that I underwent hip replacement surgery. The two week hospital / recovery time went extremely well. During the entire stay (except for the few days after the surgery) I had my handy phone and laptop operating right out of my hospital room. So, I was able to keep in touch with clients and friends. Any business was kept going in between "vitals checks" and all the other typically expected, hospital interruptions.

As for folks and friends (not living on the Eastern Shore) that I communicated with during that time, I often picked up a common vibe. That vibe was especially strong, if they reside in a major city like Baltimore, D.C. Philly, or other metropolitan areas. Looking back over those weeks, I've finally been able to figure it out, seeing that I too, have lived in major cities.

In a major city you feel safe if there's a medical problem or issue. There's an arrogance that only the big city hospitals can handle a major surgery. Then of course, we all have that crazy aunt who says, (no matter what hospital you name), "that place is a butcher shop, I wouldn't send my dog there". The aunt usually goes on to quote some stupid, urban legend, about someone you've never heard of, and how they received horrible treatment, or the doctor left a pair of scissors resting on somebody's liver.

Please allow me to put all of that theory to rest. In this area of the Eastern Shore, we have several reputable medical centers or hospitals. The people that work in these places (for the most part), are highly trained, dedicated professionals. Over the past 15 years, I've visited friends in all of these facilities. I've never heard any serious complaints.

My recent experience was with Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury, Maryland. The staff was great, very polite and professional.. From the housekeeping crew, nursing, doctors, and assistants, there are no complaints from me. Even the food was good! I suggested they open a drive through restaurant. The physical and occupational therapists push you hard and even inflict a little minor pain, but if they don't inspire you that way, you won't improve and eventually head for the door. They too, were a great staff and they were fun to work with.

In summary, you don't necessarily have to reside in a big city to have access to excellent medical facilities and personnel. Many people retiring look to the Eastern Shore, and this is a big concern of theirs. These local facilities are highly accredited and can compete with most hospitals nationwide.

Two thumbs up and thank you, from this rowdy patient to all our medical pros on the Eastern Shore. I'm now back home recovering at a positive, steady pace. Again I thank all of those who called or sent cards or candy grams. The Dance-a-thon is coming soon!

Gearin' Up For A Great Weekend

The Baltimore, D.C., and Philly area TV stations seem to be agreeing that the upcoming weekend on the Eastern Shore, should be fabulous! If you're not already here, I'd say this could be a great weekend get away.

As for me personally, I'd like to thank everyone, who has called, emailed, or sent a card, regarding my hospital stay. The hip replacement surgery went well, and now I'm a week into the rehab. As of today, we don't have any idea of when I'll be heading back home.

The folks here at Peninsula Regional Medical Center have been amazing. I can even put to an end, those rumors and traditions about bad hospital food. Every meal here has been really tasty! No complaints from this impatient patient.

I would like to ask any inventors in the blogusphere to really consider some new possibilities in the world of hospital gowns. That open back door flap problem still needs to be addressed (or is that redressed?)

A Glorious Season

Last night, the Eastern Shore got hit with just over a 1/2 inch of rain, which in turn brought some gray skies and cool weather. However, it is also Easter Weekend! (It's supposed to clear up by Sunday).

That usually means, lots of folks are going to trek to the Shore. It's one of the first big weekends of the season. Traditionally, it also means that interest in Real Estate picks up, as families start looking in the direction of their Summer Va-Cay plans. So with all that in mind, the traffic here, gets a little heavier, especially on the weekends. That in turn, means seller's expectations start stirring. Increased traffic means more potential buyers looking at more available properties.

This could be an excellent opportunity to buy that Summer Home, Vacation Spot, Investment property or that final landing zone for your Retirement. The rates are still low, and the inventory is still high. It's a buyer's market, so take advantage!

The Eastern Shore is well stocked with Cadbury Eggs, Chocolate Bunnies, and even those Peeps! It's a great place to celebrate the Easter weekend. Maybe we'll see you.... (you may want to wipe that sticky marshmallow glob off of your lip).

It Just Gets Better And Better

Here on the Shore, the weather keeps improving each week, and this is a good thing. We've also noted an increase in real estate inquiries. Could this be a good OMEN?

For those of you asking about my personal situation, I thank you for the concerns. As you may or may not know, I'm about to be slightly laid up for a few weeks to get a hip replaced. This has been slowing me down more and more over the past year, so it's time to get beyond it.

I'll be temporarily, out of commission the week after Easter. I was assured by my Doctor that I'll be up and moving around rather quickly.

Maybe You Missed It

If you weren't here, you missed one great weekend. I fired up my non-hybrid vehicle, and burned as much gas as possible so that Kelly and I could drive around the Eastern Shore and soak in the beautiful weather. (It was very hard to believe that just one week earlier, we had single digit temps and a big snow storm.)

We spent some time in Ocean City at the inlet. It was one of those days where, if you're in the direct sunlight, it's too warm for a jacket. If you move into the shade, you need the jacket. And of course, we had that annual, extra hour of sunshine!

White Overnight

Like much of the Mid-Atlantic, the Eastern Shore got hit last night with a fairly big snow storm. Depending on which particular area, we picked up anywhere from 2 - 8 inches, as far North as the Sussex County / Kent County, Delaware line.

As with most places, last night's storm warning was a cause for many stores to run out of milk and toilet tissue. What a combination. I can't think of a single recipe that uses both??

It's a great day to stay inside, sip warm beverages, and possibly get some of those indoor chores done. Yea! Like that'll happen.

Stay warm for now. We'll all thaw out soon.

A Mystery Could Be Solved

There's and old Irish song, "Who Threw The Overalls In Mrs. Murphy's Chowder". We may know the answer in a little over 2 weeks. The Eastern Shore will getting greener as many celebrate St. Patrick's Day.

Ocean City really does it up big with their annual parade & festival celebrates the “wearin o’ the green.” An Ocean City tradition with over 100 entrants including marching bands, floats, law enforcement groups & more. They make it easy for the many travelers by having the celebration on the weekend.

It's followed by entertainment, food & beverages at the festival. Saturday (March 14th). Festival, 11 a.m.- 4 p.m., parade at noon. Of course the many food and beverage establishments will be cashing in on the festivities. Plan now, to turn green on the Shore!

Pretty White Blanket

The Eastern Shore received a nice white blanket of snow yesterday. It was pretty, as many people said. Over night, farther North on the Shore (Dover & North), they received even more. South of Dover it was mostly freezing rain & unfrozen rain, which as we know becomes mostly slush.

Many school systems were closed today, and many were delayed openings. OK now we've had our Winter weather precipitation and we've lived through a few cold snaps, we're done, let's move into the Spring mode!

Tailgate At The Beach

This time of year moves kinda' slow especially here on the Eastern Shore. The possibility of the weather turning bad is the main reason. Traditionally, it stays that way until Spring or maybe Easter Weekend.

There is one break coming soon. We find in recent years, that if the weather isn't too cold and there's little or no precipitation, more and more folks come to the Shore for Super Bowl Weekend. The beach resorts have many great dining & drinking establishments that cater to the big weekend.

Folks over in the Baltimore, D.C., and up in the Philly area, like to get away from home for a quick weekend, and this is where the often land. Unless the Super Bowl involves the Eagles, Ravens, or Redskins, why not hit the road?

Most of the local motels have special, off season rates, and there's a fun atmosphere. So, if you're not already here on the Shore, pack up your chicken wings, and head to the Shore. We're ready if you are!

"...You know what we forgot?"

These are the words heard several times this week, if your home is like mine. Here on the Shore, as in many places, this past weekend is when most folks took down the Christmas & Holiday decorations. When I was a kid, those things were stored in rotting cardboard boxes, in our attic.

In today's world, we've been sold on plastic bins, and special reels for Christmas lights. I guess it's more convenient, but getting back to the blog title... After the last bin or reel is carried off to the attic or storage room... that's when you hear "you know what we forgot". It's always some insignificant, Santa Claus pot holder, or a tiny artificial flower arrangement hiding on the mantle or a shelf.

Now comes the mind game question... can't we just stick this in a drawer or cupboard until next year? The answer is standing there laughing in your face. "If you do that, it will get forgotten and we won't be able to find it next year, and Aunt Clara (who generously gave us that) would be offended if next year, she stopped by for egg nog and didn't see it displayed".

So, back to the attic with the stupid Santa Claus potholder or the singing (battery powered), toy Basset Hound, to find the correct bin for it's nearly year long storage.

It's not over, because a week from now you'll find an extra tree ornament, that the dog knocked under the couch. "Back to the bin in the attic", after hearing; "you know what we forgot", over the roar of the vacuum cleaner.

Finally, you think you've conquered it all and the issue is put to sleep. Until in July, as I walk through the house barefoot, my heel happens to snag one of those pointy, metal ornament hooks that's been hiding in the carpet since the holiday's. Now, it's my turn to yell; "you know what we forgot?"

Should Old Acquaintance Be Forgot?

Absolutely NOT! With the onset of the New Year, it's an important time to stay in touch with family and friends. Moving into a New Year is like an adventure or a fresh start.

With the issues with the economy and politics of '08, it's time to wipe the slate clean, recharge and start anew. Sounds good to me! From here on the Eastern Shore to you and your family, a wish for a "Fab and Fine 2009" (it's the only thing I could come up with that rhymes).

If you celebrated New Year's Eve, I hope you behaved yourself. If you didn't; have a great recovery today.

The Day Before, or (Christmas Eve)

Here on the Shore, as well as your home too, tomorrow's the big day! It all comes down to one question... Have you been naughty or have you been nice?

Pretty scary, considering that he knows when you've been sleeping, and he knows when you're awake (especially at work). He also knows if you've been bad or good, I just want to know "in who's opinion?" And... in today's world bad means good. It's really confusing!

Fortunately for me, I've never gotten coal in my stocking. If you have, please let me know the following: I understand the coal is for being BAD. Does it come in varying degrees? For instance, if you were just a little bad is the coal "bituminous", or if you were really bad, is it then "anthracite"? (Different degrees of bad = different degrees of coal).

Does the coal come with a warning from the National Safety Council? We wouldn't want any unnecessary home hazards. And most importantly, is there an explanation? Is the coal accompanied by a list of bad deeds, when they occurred, and how much coal is attributed to each deed?

I'm not brave enough to find out these things by myself, so I'll continue to be good in hopes of avoiding coal. I guess in today's PC climate we should specify "clean coal".

My New Parrot

Recently I received a parrot as a gift.
The parrot had a bad attitude and an even worse vocabulary. Every word out of the bird's mouth was rude, obnoxious and laced with profanity.

I tried and tried to change the bird's attitude by consistently saying only polite words, playing soft music and anything else I could think of to "clean up" the bird's vocabulary.
Finally, I was fed up and I yelled at the parrot.

The parrot yelled back.
I shook the parrot and the parrot got angrier and even ruder.
So, in desperation, I threw up my hands, grabbed the bird and put him in the freezer.
For a few minutes the parrot squawked and kicked and screamed. Then suddenly there was total quiet.

Not a peep was heard for over a minute.
Fearing that I'd hurt the parrot, I quickly opened the door to the freezer.
The parrot calmly stepped out onto my outstretched arms and said, "I believe I may have offended you with my rude language and actions. I'm sincerely remorseful for my inappropriate transgressions and I fully intend to do everything I can to correct my rude and unforgivable behavior."

I was stunned at the change in the bird's attitude.

As I was about to ask the parrot what had made such a dramatic change in his behavior, the bird continued by saying, "May I ask what it was, the turkey did?"

Weekend Weather

This has been a mixed up weather weekend. It started out with a rainy Friday & Saturday, and now today (Sunday), it looks like the sun is finally coming out of hiding. Here on the Shore, as in many places, the Spring & Fall seasons often go through these periods, where the weather just can't seem to make up its mind. Is it going to be cold? Is it going to be warm? Humid or dry?

The bad part about that is, our bodies, especially our sinuses, often can't keep up with all the changes. Therefore, here comes the sniffles, sneezes, sore throats, etc. As is the case, I've spent the last week coughing and wheezing and dripping. It's just not fun.

Then, to top off the sneeze factor, early last week I had some extensive, dental work. For me that means a sore mouth along with all the cold symptoms. So, now that the sun is shining, I'm hoping all of my simple aches and pains will be driven away, like a vampire at sunrise.

Keeping that positive theory in mind, the weather outlook for the next week is really good. Now that I've had a box of Kleenex surgically removed from my hand, I can get out and soak in the great weather. Give yourself some time to join me in truly enjoying Fall. Plus, the Christmas holidays are on the way. Look at this time of year as the calm before the storm.

It Just Takes A Minute Or Two

Tomorrow, we'll see and hear about numerous Veteran's Day observances around the Eastern Shore. The sad thing is, most of these events will have average to poor attendance. I think back to the couple of years following 9/11 and how patriotism was roaring. It was great and somewhat chilling to see how many dedicated Americans would show up at similar events.

Veteran's Day was established to honor all those who have served in our Military. Just think of where we'd be without them. Tomorrow, try to attend one of the many observances, and be sure to fly your flag. Least of all, take a few minutes to pause and give thanks to the veterans, and say a prayer for our great country.

"Chilly Beanie, Halloweenie"

Not just a quote from Bullwinkle the moose, but a fact for the Eastern Shore. Halloween is not the night to lick your pump handle due to the expected, extreme cold. All the little goblins, witches, ghosts, super heros, and other assorted trick or treaters will look a little overweight. This won't be due to over eating, it'll be because of concerned parents stuffing the tikes in winter coats, underneath the costumes.

I vividly remember how uncomfortable that was. It all starts at home, where the heat is on at around 72 degrees. You put on your coat and maybe gloves, then your parent(s) now starts stuffing you and all those clothes into a usually, undersized costume. You're then armed with your handy, trick or treat bag, and maybe a flashlight.

Sweat is now beading up on your brow. If you're wearing a mask or make-up, that gets a little nasty. Then, you step out on your porch in the cold. At this point the sweating and sudden chill gives you the urge to sense it's time to empty the ol' bladder. Now, you have to go back inside, remove the costume and coat, in order to fulfill your biological need. (Don't forget to wash your hands).

Then you return to the costume stuffing mode. All this for some candy, wow!

After retrieving a bag loaded with: Snickers, Candy Corn, KitKat's, Milky Ways, M & Ms, Jelly Beans, Cookies, Brownies, Hershey Bars, and every other sweet that screams, "time to set a dental appointment", you head back home to burn your now sweaty, smelly costume.

Good luck trick or treating and remember to brush your teeth.

As for us calorie counters remember, during the months of October & November, "candy corn counts as a vegetable.

Great Safety Idea.... but?

Daylight Saving Time reverts back to Eastern Standard Time this weekend. (By the way, as my ol' high school English teacher used to say: "it's Saving, not Savings"). In conjunction with falling back Saturday night, it's a smart idea to also check the batteries in your smoke detector(s).

In Delaware Saturday, you can visit any local fire department to receive a Free smoke detector. I believe this is a good idea. But, I'm not clear as to who is paying for the free detectors. I understand they're paid for by the Delaware Volunteer Firemans Association in conjuction with the Delaware Fire Marshals office. But, does that mean the State of Delaware (Delaware residents) actually pay from tax funds? Or, are they bought totally with donations?

I understand the need for smoke alarms, but I don't want to pay for the alarms in other people's homes. Just like, I don't want to pay their insurance premiums, or their cable TV subscription. If it's all from donations, that's great and I'm all for it.

Let's face it.. Free just means, someone else is paying for it.

If You Want Magic, Find A Fairy.. or is that Ferry?

Eastern Shore residents quickly learn the back roads and short cuts, that get them from one place to another. Because of the many waterways on the Shore, some of these short cuts involve a quick ferry ride.

Unlike me, these rides are usually common place to many residents. To our many visitors riding through the area, the ferry ride is sometimes the most intriguing part of the trip. Some visitors have never experienced taking their car on a ferry. If there are kids in the car (I'm still a kid), the whole experience is magical. At this point, Mom and Dad often have to explain the difference in "ferry" and "fairy". Good luck!

There's a ferry at Whitehaven, and Upper Ferry, both South West of Salisbury. In Sussex County, Delaware near Seaford we have the Woodland Ferry crossing the Nanticoke River. Recently, the state decided it was time to trade in the old ferry for a new 2008 model. Bad timing, since this interruption of a valuable short cut came just when the gas prices shot up to $4 a gallon. Could this have been a big conspiracy?

For a while, we've had to do without the Woodland Ferry while the state's been making improvements to the docks and loading ramps for the new boat. Often, (depending on the tide) when driving on or off the old ferry, and depending on your particular vehicle, the under carriage of your vehicle could scrape on the ramp. On the 29th, the new ferry will undertake it's maiden voyage. We'll see if the newly made improvements help in limiting the scraping issue.

The older ferry could only carry 3 cars per trip. The new one carries 6. Keep in mind, the back road often provided only 1 car per trip. I have a feeling the novelty of the new ferry, will fill it to the max for many trips to come.

So, for many of us locals, we'll soon have our short cut to Seaford restored. For Eastern Shore visitors, make a point of taking one of our back roads that include a nostalgic ferry ride. It's a quick adventure.

We're Too Cool

Back in my days of High School, "We're Too Cool" was a good thing. However my reference here is to this weekend's Eastern Shore weather. A little rainy, a little chilly, and the typical Fall weather. Many are predicting a much colder Winter this year, but who really knows?

Last night, we had to fire up the pellet stove for some heat. Tonight is our first warning of Frost. It could mean the end to many of those pretty flowers you worked so hard on last Spring. Will we ever learn?

I hope you've had a nice weekend. Time to get ready for the last quarter of the year: Trick or Treaters, Thanksgiving, & Christmas. Hold on to your wallet! Mine's already beginning to tremble.

It's All Pig Parts

That's an easy description of a fave, Eastern Shore food called "Scrapple". If you've never experienced "Scrapple", you buy it in a small loaf like package. It's consistency is like gritty Velveeta cheese product, but not as sticky.

What most folks do is slice it, and then fry it like sausage. It has a creamy, but meaty taste, and of course I love it. Being that it's pure pork, you can guess it's on the fattening side, and as nearly every food, it's probably not good for you. Again, "with moderation"..

Here in Sussex County, Delaware, one of the big scrapple producers is located in Bridgeville, (just off of RT. 13). In honor of the "porker-pig out-product", the town of Bridgeville celebrates in a big way with their Apple Scrapple Festival every year. Well this is the big weekend.

Besides eating scrapple, the festival involves many unique ways of promoting scrapple. One of which is sculpting the chunk-o-pork, along with many scrapple related contests.

Proud Moment On The Shore

Saaa - Looot (Salute), as they used to say on Hee-Haw... Seriously, we'll have 20 soldiers of the MD. National Guard's 290th Military Police returning to the Eastern Shore from Iraq on Saturday. They'll be returning to the Salisbury National Guard Armory around 1 PM.

They left for Iraq back in October of 2007. We are sooo proud of our Military. God Bless em'.

One Wet Weekend

The windy week evolved into the wet weekend. The Eastern Shore's "off season" does feel the effects of rainy or severely cold weather, but we still get many visitors. Evidently, when you want to get away, the weather doesn't get in your way!

As of this writing, we've gotten about an inch and a half of rain, and that's a good thing. We've made it through many dry weeks and still behind in yearly rainfall averages. I'm sure my lawn tractor will be getting a workout this coming week. In my opinion, this is the best time of year to spend hours cutting grass. It's that temperature where you can't decide, "jacket, or no jacket". Tough decision, but I'll get through it.

Let's face it, the weather is often unpredictable. This is the time of year, where there's many local festivals, and of course, college and high school homecomings, taking the big risk. Yesterday, the town of Delmar felt the wrath of rain, as it put a dent in both. The homecoming parade was canceled, the festival had few visitors, but the football game successfully turned into the "mudbowl". The good news for Delmar was, they won the game! Go "Wildcats".

Many Winds Are Blowing

Today the Eastern Shore is getting hit with high winds, up to 40 mph gusts. It's a bad hair day for sure! Some well needed rain is also on it's way through this weekend.

While the wind is blowing hard here, it appears to be blowing fairly strong in Washington this week regarding the Fannie Mae / Freddie Mac crisis. With some time, we should see if this can mean a positive outcome towards the current housing market.

We have a huge inventory right now. It's a great time to buy, due to so many competitive properties. If you're shopping for a home, keep in mind; historically, these market conditions are always cyclical.

So, if you're headed to the shore this weekend, for anything other than the race, I strongly suggest you use the Bay Bridge and avoid driving anywhere near Dover.

It could have been impounded. Eastern Shore visitors and residents often use the fabulous Delaware RT 1, or as we refer to it as the Delmarva Autobahn. Driving along on old 13, through all the speed traps and traffic lights, was so fatiguing.

As you know RT 1 is a great ride, but it's also a toll road, as is I-95 in the Northern part of the state. With any toll road comes those superior, privileged characters who think they are too cool because they slip through without paying the tolls.

Now, their days are numbered! The State of Delaware is now authorized to impound your vehicle for excessive toll cheating. Read all about it.

We know that a similar occurance could smack the Shore in a similar way. We've had our share of hurricanes and Nor'Easters, and we know we haven't seen the last one.

When those events happen, people stick together and help each other. They help each other through individual deeds and monetary donations. We've seen on TV, the devastation delivered by Hurricane Ike. It's time to open our wallets and help our fellow Americans, just like they'ed help us when needed.

9/11 Memories

This is where many bloggers write about what they were doing that fateful morning.

While the day in 2008 was filled with many memorials and ceremonies around the country and here on the Eastern Shore. I look at it, as a time we should all reflect on how we felt that morning rather than what we were doing. The "what we were doing" part is really insignificant in that it's probably very routine.

The feeling was anything but routine. Besides the scary churning in our stomachs, we felt fear, we felt sorrow, we felt amazement, we felt uncertainty, we felt anger, we felt helplessness, we felt anxiety, and we felt depression. Once we came to grips with those feelings, and the news networks brought home the facts of what actually happened we felt stronger and we felt better than that morning. As the time passed that first week that followed, we felt proud to be Americans. It was a great re-awakening. That's the feeling I remember more than any other.

It was a great feeling, and I want to feel it again and again. Think about it, and get that chill down your back. God Bless America!

As was mentioned in an earlier blog, today was the day, I've become a proud Grandfather. At around 3:15 today, 8 pound, 1 ounce Aislinn Brianne slid into the world. Mom & baby are doing great. My son and daughter in law live in Arkansas. I'm waiting for some pictures to be emailed.
I've stocked up on cigars! Light up ladies.

Enough of that, but I wanted to share. Maybe Oprah will have me on her show!

Today is Primary Election Day in many places throughout the Eastern Shore. The danger here is, many people will be walking around, at the same time, trying to read a sample ballot. They may stumble into you, or they could casually walk out into the street and into traffic.

Be alert and watch for these dangerous voters! If you are one of those with your face buried in a sample ballot while walking, please beware.... you never know where little Fido may have left a surprise on or near the walkway.

Seriously, if you're an Eastern Shore resident and registered voter, please be sure to vote today. It's very important!

Hanna Who?

Hanna swept in as expected, however the Shore felt little fury from the tropical storm. The beaches did encounter some erosion as the strong currents always provide some changes. Overall, the much needed rain was welcome. So now that the skies have cleared, it's back to mowing the grass!

Batten Down The Hatches

Her name is Hanna, and it looks like she'll be visiting the Eastern Shore beginning tonight. We've all been through this before. But let's not take anything for granted. The watch is now officially, a Tropical Storm Warning on the Shore. As an amateur weather geek, I suggest you stay in touch with the storm info at the AccuWeather website. They have an excellent Hurricane Tracking page.

So, lets all use a little common sense. If you don't want to get up Sunday morning, and go to the neighbors house to collect your lawn furniture, I suggest you secure it by tonight. Have a radio and some flashlights and extra batteries nearby, in case of a power outage.

By the way, numerous events for Saturday have already been cancelled or postponed. This includes the big Arts Festival at Bethany Beach, which is canceled. Saturday looks like a washout, so watch for flooding and don't take any chances. Sunday morning, we'll all go out and clean up the dead tree limbs from the yard and clean off the car(s).

Keep your fingers crossed and we'll all get together after Hanna leaves town.

Did I Say Maternity?

Shortly after posting the previous blog, I got a special phone call. (As I mentioned, some time ago, I'm about to be a Grand Dad for the first time and that's pretty exciting.) The call was from my daughter-in-law, Amanda. She was calling from her cell phone, on the way back to work from her weekly, doctor's appointment. Keep in mind the baby's not due until later in the month, or so we thought.

Amanda was quite excited because her doctor said, it looks like we're ready for "lift off". He told her that if the baby hasn't arrived by the eleventh, he would induce. So, now it looks like next Thursday could be the day! I ask that you pardon me while I brag a little. Time to stock up on cigars!

Labor Day Means..... ?

First off, it has nothing to do with a maternity ward. Let's end that old joke right here and now!

As an Eastern Shore resident, I can tell you that Labor Day is a big misconception to many people who don't live here year 'round. To a lot of folks, who only visit the Eastern Shore between Memorial Day and Labor Day, they think after Labor Day Weekend, everything here closes up until the end of next May. They feel there's no reason to cross the Bay Bridge or drive down RT 13 from the Philly area. For them, the only thing here is the beaches (Ocean City, Bethany, Dewey, and Rehoboth). Well, if your only purpose in life is to lay half naked, under the sun at the beach, you may be right. But, if you have any fun and adventure left in your soul after baking on the beach, you don't know what you're missing! Although, there is one rule: After Labor Day, you can't wear your white patent leather dancing shoes to go clubbing along Ocean Highway. (We do enforce that rule). So, if you think after Labor Day this is a Ghost Town and all the hotspots are closed. That thinking is soooo wrong!

The off season to many, is the best season! Mainly, it's less crowded. The room rates are less expensive. There's still plenty of great events like October's Wine Festival in Salisbury. There's Sun Fest and next Spring will be Spring Fest in Ocean City. Rehoboth has numerous music festivals and events, and let's not forget the Outlet shopping. Every age group is covered too! There's always weekend happenings that are geared for kids, since they're now in school. If you're in an older demo, my ol' pal Johnny Walker still fires up his keyboard at JR's at 131st Street in OC, on a few weekends. Believe me, nothing stops because it's Labor Day Weekend, that just signifies another chapter in this year's long list of big events on the beautiful Eastern Shore!

Wait a minute, many of my fellow Shore residents are not going to appreciate that I'm giving away our little secret. Shhhhhhhh ! You didn't hear this from me. Thanks.

The Digital Age Has to Get Easier

Labor Day weekend has hit the Eastern Shore. As for me it started out with heavy labor. We've all grown to love our computers (most of the time). Today, I have to apologize to many friends, clients, customers and associates. For today, I took an excursion to the Twilight Zone of computer experiences.

After showing a house to Fred & Tina this morning, I got back to my office to find that the normally amazing, wireless router to my computer had decided to become ill, causing my computer system to become totally useless. I immediately called the tech support number which was answered in India by a technician who began to handle and explain the problem to me. The tech then took remote control of my computer and messed around with it for nearly two hours. At that point the battery in my cordless phone began to die, due to the lengthy call.

Before I could switch phones, I lost the tech. Then I had to call back with another phone, where the entire process had to begin from the very beginning, with me repeating my name, phone number and extensive explanation of the problem. Another hour went by and phone number 2 began beeping. I warned the tech what was happening. He took my number to call back, so that we wouldn't have to start over from the beginning. Then phone 2 died. An hour later, no returned call. This is when I took a quick break, went downstairs and took my blood pressure medicine.

While working on this problem, I obviously couldn't use my phone or take other calls. If I were to look the other way, while working with the tech, the problem would never get fixed. Any incoming calls were going to voice mail, and emails are circling the cyberspace airport. Again, I called the 800 number. This time, the tech was in the Philippines and her name was Rhoda. I began flashing back to the old "Mary Tyler Moore Show", and almost started laughing out loud. But, I held back as this aggravating time was beginning to get silly. Again, I had to go through all the name, address, phone number, what's your problem questioning. After that Rhoda really got the ball rolling. While Rhoda took remote control of my computer and router (I find this stuff amazing), we did get to chit chat.

I told her about the Eastern Shore, and she told me about growing up in the Philippines. What was amazing, she had no accent and spoke perfect English. Obviously, we wasted too much time chitting and chatting, as phone number 3 started to beep. That's when my modern intervention and quick thinking finally kicked in. I reached across my desk to the next table to pick up the handset from the fax machine (remember those). It happened to be on the same line as Rhoda's call. Ahh, my genius mind had finally paid off. Just one problem... I don't think that handset had ever been used, and the cord is really short.

Now, I couldn't see the computer screen, without pulling the handset away from my ear. What a pain in the ear (or other 3 lettered body part)! I spent the next two hours or so maneuvering around the desk like a contortionist. Thankfully by about 4:30, Rhoda had squared away the problems and I was back on line, playing catch up.

So, to those of you that are awaiting emails and returned phone calls, I say... maybe tomorrow? If the Good Lord's willin' and the creek don't rise!

Wow, What A Weekend!

If you were here on the Eastern Shore this past weekend, you know about the terrific weather. It was a lot like a perfect Fall weekend. And to think, we've got one more big Summer weekend left. Labor Day Weekend is usually considered the end of the BIG season. The best thing is, it also marks the beginning of my favorite time of year, Fall. I prefer calling it Fall over Autumn, mainly because it's easier to spell.

Now, if the weather (like we just experienced) can keep it up, this will be a fantastic Fall season. Most schools on the Shore have started up their new year. So, give yourself some extra time getting where you're going, to allow for the slow moving school busses.

Git The Truck, We're Fixin To Go To The Show

Last night one of Country Music's best bands played to the Eastern Shore. "Montgomery Gentry" was on stage at the Civic Center in Salisbury. The opening act was "Lady Antebellum". They were both, outstanding shows.

I have to say, things have changed with today's concert going generation. I can remember seeing acts from my younger days, where the show was a good time and you hardly sat down. Now, it's true I'm older, and us older folks just don't have the energy to stay on our feet and rock the night away. But, what I noticed were the younger generation (under 20) near my seat. It's as if they don't know how to have fun.

They've spent their lives in front of the TV and video games and it appears they don't care to intermingle and socialize with others. Why can't they enjoy the show without playing with their cell phones and texting? Ah, what the heck, it's fun. I guess it's a mental challenge. I remember my parents watching me play "Pong". They're response was: "I don't know what he sees in that crazy beeping thing".

This young girl near me had the glow of her cell phone on the whole night. She was constantly texting. What was so important?

The one to the Left of me, could have received the Olympic Gold for "Fast Thumbs".. Oh well, I guess it's just the changing times. I have to admit, I receive and send text messages on my cell phone occasionally. I just can't click 'em off as fast as Miss Super Thumbs at the concert, but I'm getting there. OK, I admit it, I'm just jealous. Every new generation has new toys. The preceeding generation always wishes they had that!

Back to the concert and the tie in... Montgomery Gentry's song Lucky Man says; "... God's given me a pretty fair hand, gotta' house and a piece of land..."

Well, it looks like we're getting a short reprieve from the harsh August heat and humidity. Eastern Shore beach lovers enjoy the hot weather as it offers more fun in the sun. Love it or not, today and this weekend will be a nice break from the Air Conditioner.

A few years ago, Tom & Ruth Marzano, moved to the Salisbury area from Northern New Jersey. I assisted them with the purchase of their home. A little over a year ago they moved to a new job near Buffalo, New York. Yesterday, I was happy to receive an email from them. They said that they attended a youth football practice the other night and had to wear jackets. Some folks even broke out the blankets. OK, none of that here on the Shore yet. But, it won't be long.

Is It Beware, Or Is It Enjoy?

It depends on where you find yourself in this controversy. April 18th, the town of Bethany Beach Town Council enacted an ordinance which prohibits smoking on the town's boardwalk and plaza area, along with all town owned or controlled parks. In Spring when the beach encountered some storm damage, it wasn't possible to established the smoking and non-smoking areas, and the law wasn't enforced.

Now that the damage has been repaired, No Smoking areas have now been established along the beach front. So BEWARE, the ordinance is now being enforced. Standard procedure is that a violator is first warned and given an opportunity to comply, before any enforcement action is taken.

Personally, I don't like cigarette smoke but, as long as tobacco is a legal product, it's no one's business, and they should BUTT out! So, fire 'em up if you've got 'em, just do it in the specified areas. Otherwise, the tobacco police may lock you up in the town square blockade, where the villagers are permitted to spit and throw rotten vegetables.

It Sure Beats Last Year

It seems that most people around the Delmarva area like to travel. Many have motor homes, travel trailers, campers and the like. Occasionally, I also get the travel bug. However, this Summer it looks like we'll stay at home.

Since traveling is so popular, especially when the gas prices are realistic, I thought I'd recant what happened last year at this time. August 4, 2007, my son was to get married in Little Rock, Arkansas. Kelly and I thought this would be a great get away trip. We'd drive and see some sights. From the Eastern Shore, Little Rock is about 1,200 miles. We figured we make it in two days, with a halfway stop over around Bristol, Tennessee.

On Thursday, August 2nd we jumped in the van with one of our dogs and headed West. (If you recall, the first week of August last year was one of the hottest weeks of the Summer). We got through the Washington, DC traffic OK, but then the unpredictable happened.

We had just passed the Manassas, Virginia exit when the cool breeze from the auto air conditioning started getting warm. Not a good sign. Within minutes the breeze became rather hot. Amazing, so did some of the language in the van.

We went back around to the Manassas exit and went to an auto repair place to see if we could get it fixed. Not to happen, of course. I was told after waiting 2 hours for the ac guy to get back from lunch, it would cost over a $1,000 dollars and we'd have to wait until Monday for parts.

It was at this point, I began biting a large hole in my lip. After sitting at the repair place, wasting time, we wrestled with "what to do now." We decided to keep on track to the wedding.

The car thermometer was reading 95 - 102 . How did we do this before the days of AC? I guess I too have become a sissy, when it comes to hot weather. I had sweat dripping from .... let's just say everywhere. Kelly and I were exceptionally proud of our hair by the time we arrived at our first motel stop near Bristol. The long haired Chihuahua was totally whipped. His tongue was the size of my shoe.

I fired up the room AC at the motel, moved a chair directly in front of it and sat there for an hour.

What an adventure.

We finally made it to Little Rock in time for all the fine festivities. Of course when we attended each event we had to use the "AC-less" vehicle. Arriving at the rehearsal, rehearsal dinner, wedding, and reception, exceptionally well dressed, but soaking wet. This always makes a great first impression.

My son's new in-laws must have thought we were scuba divers. Fortunately, we were able to explain our situation, which got a few laughs. It was like an episode from a TV sitcom. The wedding was great and went off without a hitch (no pun intended).

In comparison, our return trip home to the Eastern Shore was uneventful.

One good thing! When you go to a wedding and the rehearsal, and you have to partake in all the overeating, you can expect to gain a few pounds. Next time, try going without the AC in the middle of Summer. The excessive sweating countered the weight gain, so I guess this is a good thing.

One exciting note to add to this tale. My son Adam and new daughter in law Amanda, are expecting the first grandchild this September. Heat or no heat, life is good. Cigars for everyone!

$300 Billion ... Is That All?

When I heard that the amazing Congress had passed the Mortgage Bail Out, all I could do is shake my head. Any wonder why their approval rating is in single digits?

This will affect people all over the U.S., including the Eastern Shore. If you're thinking "my mortgage is up to date and I'm fine, I don't need any form of bail out, therefore, it doesn't affect me". Wrong-O... You pay taxes don't you? That $300billion is coming from somewhere, guess where? That's right, your wallet! No matter where you live.

It's Time To Practice Spitting

There's probably a zillion people who visit the beach each year who think this way; "there's nothing between the Bay Bridge and Ocean City". Maybe you, a friend, or a relative believe this.

As a local Eastern Shore dweller for over 13 years I've learned that this is sometimes, common thinking for many visitiors from the Western Shore. Too bad for them! They're just gonna' have to miss the big event:

Oh Look, We Have Company

The Eastern Shore is well known for its wildlife. Hunters hit the Shore during each season because of its abundance of wildfowl and deer.

This past weekend, some of this wildlife stopped by for a visit. In the evening the temperature cooled down. I found a lawn chair that wasn't peppered with bird calling cards. I then fired up an "Isla Del Sol" cigar and settled down in the chair to relax. I glanced over to the tree by the patio, when I realized, we have a visitor.

Not being a big fan of snakes, I have no idea what species I was looking at. As a sufferer of "snake-a-phobia", I jumped up and headed to the other side of the yard. I can actually move rather quickly for a large man. Those of you that don't fear snakes are probably having a good laugh at my expense. That's OK, I'm sure it's just a harmless variety of snake. Please, someone tell me I'm right.

If you're a snake authority, please let me know what I'm dealing with. We occasionally see these, but it's hard to discuss snake species and habitats with others, while screaming, sweating, and running down the road at full bore.

My friend Tad in Richmond is a snake authority, but he's away on a Bermuda cruise. Unless one of you readers rescues me, I'll have to wait until his return.

Weather Update

The Shore is soooo spread out. A lot of people just don't realize it. When they travel here from say, Baltimore, Washington, Philly, Virginia, Pennsylvania or New Jersey, they look around and see a small area. This is usually because the Shore isn't as densely populated as where they're coming from.

Here's an example of where this is leading... I get a phone call from a friend or relative in Baltimore. They're planning to spend the upcoming weekend in Ocean City. First thing they ask me is "how's the weather?". They are well aware that, where I live is 20 to 30 minutes from Ocean City. But they always assume, if the sun's shining on my front lawn, then it's shining on the boardwalk. Or if I'm wearing a jacket today, they'll need one at the beach. Trust me, it rarely works out that way.

The Shore is a big, flat peninsula. Rarely, does a weather front stop here. They usually, just roll on through. If a front ever stalls over the Eastern Shore it's because other fronts are blocking them. It's not because of anything geographical.

So, this is why I've provided all the major Shore points, weather forecasts on the blog (over in the Right column). Just click on Bethany Beach, the next time you're heading there for a quiet stay, or click on Rehoboth, when it's time to hit the "outlet malls", or click on Crisfield when you're on your way to grab that bushel of crabs for the weekend party. This way, you'll know whether to wear your jacket or just your "Speed-O". oooops again, TMI....

Yummers

One of the best benefits of living on the Eastern Shore is the fresh produce. From Spring through Fall, a zillion little produce stands pop up along all the major highways. I have yet to buy from one, where the produce wasn't fresh and flavorful. Now there are stands that are better stocked or better priced than others.

Just this week, I stopped at a new stand and purchased a basket of bright, red tomatoes, some corn, and a big fat watermelon. After getting home, I was able to stuff the melon into the fridge, after some re-arranging. Warm watermelon is OK, but when it's chilled it becomes a special, traditional, Summer treat.

I have to say, we cut that melon and it was one of the tastiest, seedless melons I've ever tasted. It was so good, Kelly was using a straw to drink up all the juice. As usual, it was dripping everywhere.

Of course the tomatoes were delicious too. The corn was sweet and soooo fresh!

By the time the season ends, we'll all get our fill. By March of next year, we'll start craving it all over again.

I think there's still a couple slices of melon left, and I sure can't mess with that, anywhere near this computer keyboard. Hmmm, I could sit here and continue to type... Yeah right!

It's Friday, quittin' time.. after the "melon break", I can probably find an excellent, relaxing cigar! I'm heading to the patio. Have a great weekend!

I Think We Can Say Summer Is Here

The humidity is getting really steep. So, the heat index is climbing fast. But ya' know, we're a bunch of sissies. I can remember, as many of you can, before the days of air conditioning. To cool off you had to go outside, sit under a tree with a beverage and pray for a breeze

Fortunately, my childhood front yard was one of the shadiest yards in the neighborhood. A lot of neighbors and others were always welcome to bring a lawn chair, come over and take advantage of our big shade trees. I can remember sitting there, sweating like a pig. Usually, gathered under the trees would also be; one, or both of my parents, a couple of other kids, and maybe a neighbor or two. Due to the heat, you didn't feel much like talking. Then, when some slight, polite conversation did ensue, it would be a critique of the breeze. For instance: "ooooh, that felt good", "yeah, if it would just keep doing that", "this is nice", "I'm going to turn my chair, so I can catch more of that air", "I don't think it's ever been this hot", (then came the all time winner): "look at those trees and the leaves moving, but I don't feel a thing".

Not only were the Summers hotter (without ac), but considering the conversations, Summers were also, much more boring. But, it was a different time.

Today, it's not just the Eastern Shore, but pretty much the whole East coast is inundated with this heat wave. We'll all make the best of it. Wipe the sweat off of your brow, have a cold drink and enjoy your Summer.

One tip from my house... use some powder. We don't want any complaints about chafing. TMI

Top Entertainment on The Shore

I found myself saying, what I've heard others say in the past. "It's been a year or two since I've been to the Delaware State Fair, maybe I'll go this Summer". The last time my wife Kelly and I went to the Fair, we had a great time. Not that we got on all the rides and played every game. Just going there, seeing the sights and seeing the people from all over. We even took the royal tour. There's a tractor, towing a tram so you don't have to walk everywhere. Truth is, there's a lot of ground to cover if you want to see it all. (There was a younger time, when I made fun of the tram riders.)

One thing that never fails, at least for us. We always run into someone we know. It's definitely worth the trip no matter where you're coming from.

This year it's another fantastic line up of entertainment, and for the entire family. Another reason to be on the Eastern Shore.

It was a little scary waking up to "a RED, Dangerous Air Quality Alert in effect today" for the Eastern Shore.

Park Quest is a Shore Thing

Maryland's "Park Quest East", is a family adventure at six of the State Lands on Maryland's beautiful Eastern Shore.

Each facility has a unique challenge you must complete. If you complete all six Quests you are eligible for the Quest Finale at the end of the summer at Pocomoke River State Park's Shad Landing area.
